| The WACO Historical Society has a special affinity for the large lumbering
combat gliders of the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II. After all, the
WACO Aircraft Company was the design engineer for the only U.S. made combat
cargo glider used in the affray. We also made 1,074 (or 1,075, depending
on who you talk to) of the main one, the CG4A, at our factory here in Troy.
For years we struggled with the idea of restoring or replicating one of them,
hoping to acquire and/or make the necessary part and do the assembly.
Finally, we have come to the realization that we do not have the volunteer base,
the finances or the space to do such a project justice. Visitors to our
area are fortunate in that a fully restored CG4A is on display at the U.S. Air
Force Museum, less than thirty miles away.
This does not mean we have abandoned the "glider project", however. We
have the nose section and main cargo section frame of a CG15A and an intact
floor board which we will use in future projects in our expanding
Museum, as time and resources permit.
We will continue to make available what material we have from the factory
files to others who are doing glider restorations and of course share what we
have learned over the years with anyone interested in the history of this grand
old war bird. We also have memorabilia and stories from many of the local
men and women who worked in the wartime factory.
We will do what we can to preserve and expand the history of the heroes who
made, flew and manned the combat glider of WWII. For further information
contact us at 937-335-9226 or by mail at the address above.
