The WACO Historical Society is not just interested in
preserving aviation’s past. The society actively works to nurture aviation’s
future through its Learning Center programs.
The WACO Learning Center conducts programs with schools,
Scout troops, Civil Air posts, at aviation events at WACO field, and other local
airports.
The Education Specialist, Sharon Murner, has developed an
out reach program. This program is designed in such a manner that it fosters
science, technology, engineering and math in schools. For more information
about this or any other Learning Center activity contact the WACO Historical
Society, or Sharon Murner. (See Below)
Every
summer there is a WACO Learning Center Camp held over 5 days in June at WACO
Field. Girls and boys ages 10 to 13 enjoy different projects each day that
demonstrate the principles of flight. They will engage in making and flying hot
air balloon, kites, radio controlled model airplanes, paper rockets, boomerangs,
Estes rockets, and an optional flight in an airplane.
Many campers have been able to attend summer camp through
scholarships generously donated by Friends of WACO. If you feel you need a
scholarship to attend or if you would like to become a scholarship provider
please contact
SMURNER@woh.rr.com or
KarenPurke@woh.rr.com, or called (937) 901-1928.
The WACO Learning Center is always looking for volunteers
to get involved in conducting these programs. Adults with experience teaching or
working with youth are especially encouraged to get involved. Anyone with an
interest in getting kids excited about aviation, science, technology,
engineering or math is welcome.
